Sony Turned Down The Order: 1886 Sequel Due to Critical Reception, Dev Says

by Finn Feb 27,2025

Ready at Dawn's co-founder reveals Sony rejected a sequel to The Order: 1886 due to the original's lukewarm critical reception. Andrea Pessino shared with MinnMax that despite the challenging development of the first game and its ultimately middling reviews, Ready at Dawn pitched a compelling sequel to Sony. Pessino stated they would have accepted almost any terms to create it, driven by a desire to deliver a satisfying experience to players and redeem the franchise's potential.

The original 2015 title, while visually stunning, faced criticism for its restrictive gameplay. Pessino detailed a strained relationship with Sony during development, citing withheld payments due to compromises on graphical fidelity to meet deadlines. While acknowledging this as a common practice in third-party publishing, the experience left Ready at Dawn with little leverage to negotiate favorable terms for a sequel. Despite this, they were prepared to endure unfavorable conditions to create a follow-up, believing the groundwork laid in the first game was strong enough to build upon.

The Order: 1886 concluded on a significant cliffhanger, leaving fans yearning for a continuation. Unfortunately, with Ready at Dawn's closure by Meta in 2024, those hopes are now extinguished. IGN's original review (6/10) highlighted the game's impressive visuals but criticized its limited gameplay freedom. Pessino's account underscores the complexities of game development and the sometimes-uncertain fate of even promising franchises.
