Stellar Blade Sequel Promises Richer Narrative After 3 Million Copies Sold

by Finn Jun 28,2025

With *Stellar Blade* surpassing the 3 million sales milestone globally, director Hyung-tae Kim has confirmed that a sequel is already in development—and it promises to deliver a "serious" and more substantial narrative experience. In a recent interview with This Is Game, translated by Genki, Kim shared insights into the storytelling challenges faced during the original game’s development.

According to Kim, the creative team had originally envisioned a much deeper and layered story for Eve and her companions. However, due to budget constraints—particularly the high cost of producing cutscenes—they were forced to cut a significant portion of the cinematic content, leaving many players with unresolved questions about the game world and its lore. This includes lingering curiosity around Eve's frequent costume changes, which remain unexplained in the current version of the game.

Although there was some discussion about potentially adding these cutscenes post-launch, Kim expressed concerns that doing so might create inconsistencies or "clash" with the existing understanding players have of the story. As a result, the team has chosen to save this deeper narrative for the sequel, where it can be presented cohesively and in full. Fans can look forward to what Kim describes as a "sufficiently rich narrative" in the follow-up.

However, fans shouldn’t expect the sequel to arrive anytime soon. At the moment, the entire Shift Up team is focused on completing the PC port of *Stellar Blade*, which Kim mentioned they aim to release "by 2027" if possible.

Interestingly, the June 11 PC launch of *Stellar Blade* has already made waves, becoming Sony’s biggest single-player Steam launch to date. The game currently holds a peak concurrent player count of over 192,000. For context, other major Sony titles like Ghost of Tsushima (77,154 players), God of War (73,529 players), and Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered (66,436 players) pale in comparison. The only Sony-published title with a higher concurrent peak is Helldivers 2, though it’s worth noting that Helldivers is a multiplayer-focused experience.

IGN’s Stellar Blade review awarded the game a 7/10, stating: “Stellar Blade is great in all of the most important ways for an action game, but dull characters, a lackluster story, and several frustrating elements of its RPG mechanics prevent it from soaring along with the best of the genre.”

The PC version brings a host of enhancements, including AI upscaling support via Nvidia DLSS 4 and AMD FSR 3, an unlocked framerate, Japanese and Chinese voiceover options, ultrawide display compatibility, improved environment textures, and DualSense controller support for immersive haptic feedback and trigger effects.
