Apex Legends' Controversial Battle Pass Changes Reversed Following Player Backlash
Respawn Entertainment has performed a complete U-turn on its recently announced, unpopular Apex Legends battle pass changes. The developer announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the revised system, met with significant community outrage, will not be implemented for Season 22, launching August 6th.
The original plan involved two separate $9.99 battle passes per season, eliminating the option to purchase the premium pass using in-game Apex Coins. This sparked widespread criticism.
Respawn's Revised Battle Pass System
The revised Season 22 battle pass structure is now significantly simpler:
This streamlined approach directly addresses the concerns raised by the community.
The Source of the Controversy
The initial battle pass proposal, unveiled July 8th, required players to pay $9.99 twice for the premium pass—once at the season's start and again midway through. The previous system allowed purchase with 950 Apex Coins or a $9.99 coin bundle for the entire season. The introduction of a more expensive premium+ option at $19.99 per half-season further fueled player frustration.
The Negative Community Response
The backlash was swift and intense. Players flooded X and the Apex Legends subreddit with negative feedback, labeling the changes as unacceptable. The Steam page for Apex Legends saw a surge in overwhelmingly negative reviews, totaling 80,587 at the time of writing.
Respawn's Response and Path Forward
Respawn acknowledged the missteps, apologizing for the poor communication surrounding the initial announcement. They committed to improved transparency and timely updates moving forward. The developers reiterated their focus on addressing player concerns, including combating cheaters, enhancing game stability, and implementing quality-of-life improvements. Patch notes detailing stability fixes are scheduled for release on August 5th.
While the reversal is welcomed, the incident underscores the importance of player feedback in shaping game development decisions. Respawn's response demonstrates a commitment to rebuilding player trust. The community eagerly awaits the promised improvements and stability fixes in the upcoming Season 22 patch.
