Boss of Baldur's Gate 3 Dev Larian Says Single-Player Games Aren't Dead: 'They Just Have to Be Good'

by Hannah Mar 19,2025

The perennial debate in gaming circles resurfaces: are large-scale single-player games a dying breed? Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke, fresh off the monumental success of Baldur's Gate 3, offers a succinct rebuttal. In a recent X/Twitter post, Vincke dismissed the recurring claim that these games are "dead," stating simply, "Use your imagination. They're not. They just have to be good."

Vincke's perspective carries significant weight. Larian Studios built its reputation on a foundation of critically acclaimed CRPGs like Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2, culminating in the triumphant release of Baldur's Gate 3.

PlayKnown for his insightful and concise commentary, whether at events like The Game Awards or in casual discussions, Vincke consistently emphasizes the importance of passionate development, respect for both developers and players, and a genuine care for the games themselves. This latest statement, while not unexpected, serves as a powerful reaffirmation of his philosophy.

2025 has already witnessed the success of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 from Warhorse Studios, a significant single-player title. With several months remaining in the year, ample opportunity exists for other single-player games to make their mark.

Larian Studios has shifted its focus away from Baldur's Gate 3 and the Dungeons & Dragons universe to pursue a new, original IP. However, Hasbro's SVP of digital games, Dan Ayoub, hinted at potential future announcements regarding the Baldur's Gate series during this year's Game Developers Conference.
