Everwild: Canceled Xbox Fantasy World Revealed in New Detail

by Connor Dec 04,2025

A fresh batch of Everwild screenshots has emerged online, showcasing the highly anticipated fantasy game that spent years in development before Xbox canceled it earlier this year.

Everwild was being created by Rare, the veteran British studio behind Sea of Thieves and numerous classic titles. The long-gestating project, however, was shut down in July as part of Microsoft's broad layoffs and project cancellations.

These new Everwild screenshots surfaced through the online portfolio of a former team member. According to MP1st, the images are believed to depict a version of the game "fairly close to its cancellation," showing a silver-haired protagonist exploring ancient ruins within a dense forest.

Previous teaser trailers offered only brief glimpses of Everwild, and Rare remained notably secretive about its actual gameplay. However, the newly revealed screenshots provide some insight, particularly through a look at the game's inventory screen, which displays a comprehensive list of items and categorized tabs.

Visible inventory sections include "Favorites," "Figments," "Tools," "Mosaics," "Seeds," and "Plants." Figments appear to be plant-based creatures—somewhat reminiscent of Pikmin, but with bulbous, onion-like heads. One light-green creature is identified as a "Light Figment," while other variants are shown in blue, white, and brown.

The game's extensive seed collection includes an item called "Shrub Seed," used for growing shrubs. Mosaics, on the other hand, feature creatures seen in earlier Everwild teasers, such as a deer-like animal with a large orange crest.

A settings menu is also visible; reports suggest it would have used Sea of Thieves player data to recommend common gameplay configurations.

Everwild was anticipated as a third-person fantasy adventure with god-game elements, though its development saw multiple revisions, including a full reboot after creative director Simon Woodroffe departed in 2020. Veteran designer Gregg Mayles—known for his work on Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Piñata, and Sea of Thieves—stepped in as director. Mayles is now believed to have left the studio entirely following Everwild's cancellation.

As for what's next for Rare, beyond ongoing support for Sea of Thieves, the studio's future projects remain unclear. In a recent Community Direct broadcast, the developer emphasized its commitment to the pirate-themed live service game, with plans to deliver updates for at least a couple more years. A new revenue stream for the title is also expected in early 2026, with the introduction of a paid subscription for custom servers.
