HoYoverse's Genshin Impact: A Year of Backlash and Developer Reflection

HoYoverse president Liu Wei recently shared the significant impact of negative player feedback on the Genshin Impact development team. His candid remarks, delivered at a Shanghai event and translated by SentientBamboo on YouTube, revealed a period of intense "anxiety and confusion" following a surge in player dissatisfaction, particularly around the Lunar New Year 2024 and subsequent updates.

Wei described the overwhelming criticism as leaving the team feeling "useless," highlighting the emotional toll of the intense negative response. This followed controversies surrounding the 4.4 Lantern Rite event (criticized for inadequate rewards), perceived shortcomings compared to other HoYoverse titles like Honkai: Star Rail, and negative comparisons to Kuro Games' Wuthering Waves. Further fueling the backlash were concerns over the 4.5 Chronicled Banner's gacha mechanics and accusations of cultural misrepresentation in certain character designs.

Despite the emotional weight of the criticism, Wei acknowledged player concerns, addressing perceptions of developer arrogance and emphasizing the team's shared gamer identity. He stressed the need to filter through the noise and identify genuine player feedback.

Looking ahead, Wei expressed renewed commitment to improving the game and fostering a stronger connection with the player community. While acknowledging that meeting every expectation remains a challenge, he highlighted the renewed courage and trust instilled by the player base. He concluded with a call for both developers and players to move forward, collaboratively creating the best possible Genshin Impact experience.

The statement comes alongside the recent release of a preview teaser for the upcoming Natlan region, slated for release on August 28th. This suggests a renewed focus on delivering positive content and re-engaging the player base.
