Ghost of Yotei promises to be the most ambitious project yet from Sucker Punch, boasting unparalleled freedom and the largest maps the studio has ever crafted. Dive in to discover what this highly anticipated game has in store and how it celebrates Japanese culture.

In a recent interview with Famitsu on April 24, Sucker Punch unveiled exciting new details about their upcoming standalone sequel to the Ghost series. Ghost of Yotei takes the beloved elements of the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima and expands upon them, enriching both gameplay and narrative.
Creative Director Jason Cornell emphasized that Ghost of Yotei will offer players the most freedom in gameplay and the most expansive maps ever created by the studio. Rather than guiding players linearly, Cornell stated, "the player can find the location of the Yotei Six on their own and take on the challenge of avenging them."
Just last week, Sucker Punch announced the PS5 release date for Ghost of Yotei and released a new trailer titled "The Onryō’s List." This trailer provided glimpses of the storyline and gameplay, introducing fans to the protagonist Atsu and her quest for vengeance against the Yotei Six.

In addition to expansive exploration, Ghost of Yotei offers a broader range of melee weapons. Fans speculated about this based on the latest trailer, and Creative Director Nate Fox confirmed these speculations. Beyond the iconic samurai sword, players can now wield the odachi (Japanese long sword), a chain sickle, double swords, and a spear.
Fox underscored the samurai sword's central role, but noted that other weapons can be learned from various teachers and masters encountered throughout the story and open world.

Unlike its predecessor, where the samurai's honor was a key narrative focus, Atsu is not bound by such constraints as she is not necessarily a samurai. This freedom allows her to use any available weapon on the battlefield. For instance, if an enemy drops their weapon, Atsu can pick it up and use it against others. Fox clarified, "However, it is limited to some weapons. It's not like every enemy or weapon is targeted, but if you can handle it, you're going to treat it."

Set in 1603 around Mt. Yotei in Ezo (present-day Hokkaido), Ghost of Yotei captures a unique blend of lawlessness and natural beauty, as described by Cornell: "a stage that balances a lawless environment with no security yet and an environment where danger lurks in the beauty of nature."
The game will also feature the Ainu culture and its people, an indigenous group native to northern Japan. To ensure authenticity, the developers conducted extensive research in Hokkaido, visiting museums and consulting with experts on Ainu culture. Cornell was inspired by Hokkaido's stunning landscapes, motivating the team to recreate this setting for players worldwide.

Ghost of Tsushima was lauded by Japanese critics for its respectful portrayal of Japanese culture and history. Sucker Punch aims to maintain this high standard with Ghost of Yotei, showcasing the "dangers lurking in the magnificent wilderness of Ezo."
Ghost of Yōtei is set to launch exclusively on the PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates by checking out our article below!
