Obsidian Entertainment took center stage today with its highly anticipated *The Outer Worlds 2* Direct, delivering a planet-sized showcase packed with gameplay reveals and deep-dive details about the upcoming 2025 sequel. The 30-minute presentation gave fans a humorous yet informative look at how Obsidian is expanding upon the foundation of the original 2019 spacefaring RPG, introducing refined mechanics, bold new features, and a more immersive universe than ever before.
Hosted by comedian and voice actor Ben Schwartz—best known for his role as Sonic in the *Sonic the Hedgehog* movies—the event blended skits with gameplay breakdowns, keeping the tone light while diving deep into what players can expect from this ambitious sequel. And for those marking their calendars, *The Outer Worlds 2* is set to launch on October 29, 2025, as officially announced during the 2025 Xbox Games Showcase. You can read all about that reveal here.
In *The Outer Worlds 2*, players take on the role of an Earth Directorate Agent—an elite force described by Obsidian as “space cowboys or sky marshals” who step in to fix problems across the galaxy. How you shape your journey from there is entirely up to you.
Character creation has been expanded with meaningful choices like Backgrounds and Traits, which influence your gameplay experience. Whether you choose to be Brilliant, Heroic, Innovative, Lucky—or even Dumb—each decision adds flavor and function to your playstyle. Skills have also been refined, while perks draw heavy inspiration from the system seen in *Fallout: New Vegas*. One standout example is the Assassin perk, which grants increased movement speed after a stealth kill.
Expanding both the arsenal and player freedom was a key goal for Obsidian with *The Outer Worlds 2*. This means more weapons, each with unique animations and special traits. During the Direct, several standout firearms were shown, including *Rookie’s Reward*, a weapon that levels up alongside the player and celebrates each milestone with a burst of confetti and fireworks.
Another quirky highlight is the *Pop-Up Gun*, which uses a drone to distract enemies with animated pop-up ads, and a rhythm-based sword that rewards players for striking enemies in sync with music. Throwables have also received a creative overhaul, including science grenades that use zero-gravity tech to suspend foes mid-air.
Movement and exploration have been significantly improved too. Players now enjoy greater freedom to run, jump, slide, and parkour through the world of Arcadia in search of loot. For the first time, players can toggle between first- and third-person perspectives—a welcome addition missing from the original game.
One of the most beloved features from the original game makes a triumphant return: Flaws. These optional negative traits offer powerful trade-offs, adding depth and humor to character builds. Among the four showcased in the Direct:
These Flaws encourage creative and often chaotic playstyles, reinforcing the game’s satirical tone and player-driven storytelling.
*The Outer Worlds 2* introduces a rich cast of factions and companions, each deeply woven into the game’s narrative and world-building. The Protectorate, for instance, is an authoritarian regime ruling over the isolated colony of Arcadia. Obsidian describes their ideology as a reflection of how much freedom people are willing to sacrifice for security and luxury—and in their case, it’s “everything.”
Also returning and reimagined is the Order of the Ascendant, a splinter group from the original Order of Scientific Inquiry with deep ties to the Protectorate. These factions aren’t just background noise—they’re infused with Obsidian’s signature satire and narrative depth.
Players will also encounter a diverse roster of six companions, each with complex backstories and personal quests. Among them:
Additionally, a *Fallout: New Vegas*-inspired radio system returns, featuring faction-specific stations with around 20 original tracks per station—enhancing immersion and world-building.
Obsidian emphasizes that player choice remains at the heart of *The Outer Worlds 2*. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the early mission *The Bridge*, where players must find a way to lower a critical bridge. Options range from convincing The Protectorate to do it themselves, sneaking into the control room, or going in guns blazing.
But Obsidian goes further, offering tools like a poison gas shield for navigating hazardous zones or jump boots for enhanced mobility. Players can even choose to sacrifice a companion to gain clearance—showcasing the moral complexity and freedom built into the game’s design.
As the Direct concluded, Obsidian reflected on the scale of the project, stating, “*The Outer Worlds 2* is really the biggest game we’ve ever made.” With its expanded systems, deeper storytelling, and October 29, 2025 release date confirmed, it’s clear that Obsidian is aiming to deliver something truly special.
