Avowed's Success Spurs Sequel or Expansion Talk
Following the successful launch of Avowed, Obsidian and Microsoft are reportedly pleased with sales figures, hinting at potential future projects for the franchise. Avowed Game Director, Carrie Patel, recently spoke with Bloomberg, expressing her desire to continue working within the established world.
Future Expansions and Sequels?
Patel, in a February 22, 2025 interview, indicated a strong interest in developing both expansions and a sequel to Avowed. She highlighted the team's established expertise and the rich world they've created, stating, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it." While no official plans have been announced, Patel's comments suggest a strong possibility.
Development Challenges and Changes
Patel also discussed the complex development journey of Avowed. The project, initiated in 2018 amidst Obsidian's sale considerations, faced numerous hurdles. The acquisition by Microsoft in 2020 brought changes, including the removal of certain features and the cancellation of multiplayer functionality. A leadership team change and game reboot in January 2021 further reshaped the project. Patel described the process as "messy," but ultimately successful. She emphasized the challenges of managing a large team (over 80 people) and the shift in focus towards strengthening the narrative and lore, incorporating elements from the Pillars of Eternity franchise, and transitioning from an open world to open zones.
Pillars of Eternity Tactics on the Horizon?
The resurgence of the Pillars of Eternity franchise with Avowed has sparked interest in a new spin-off: Pillars of Eternity Tactics. Josh Sawyer, Director of Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, revealed during a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream that the development team is keen on creating a tactics game within this universe. However, Sawyer also acknowledged the challenges in determining the project's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale. While a Pillars of Eternity 3 is also on Sawyer's radar, he envisions a significantly larger budget, comparable to Baldur's Gate 3's $100 million investment.
Avowed is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned for further updates!
