The 2025 Esports World Cup (EWC), the world's premier gaming and esports festival, is making headlines with a surprising addition to its lineup: chess! This ancient game, often called "The Game of Kings," is officially entering the esports world, thanks to a landmark partnership between Chess.com, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF).

EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert hailed chess as "the mother of all strategy games," expressing excitement about its inclusion in the EWC. He highlighted chess's rich history, global appeal, and vibrant competitive scene as perfect for the event's mission of uniting popular games and their communities.

Adding to the excitement, retired world champion and current world number one, GM Magnus Carlsen, will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a wider audience. Carlsen stated, "This partnership presents an incredible opportunity to grow the game, introducing chess to new audiences and inspiring future generations of players."

The EWC will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, 2025. Top chess players from around the globe will compete for a staggering $1.5 million prize pool. To enhance the esports appeal, the 2025 CCT will feature a new 10-minute time control format for matches, with an Armageddon tiebreaker.

Chess, originating in ancient India over 1500 years ago, has transcended generations. Its digital adaptation, particularly through platforms like Chess.com, has broadened its reach, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Media coverage and popular culture, including shows like The Queen's Gambit, have further boosted its popularity. This official esports designation promises to attract even more players and fans.
