Welcome to our latest IGN First, where we dive into a month of exclusive coverage for April, focusing on The Outer Worlds 2. We're thrilled to present the first real-time gameplay glimpse, showcasing a quest that involves infiltrating the N-Ray Facility. This sneak peek not only highlights new features and mechanics but also illustrates how the game reimagines level design. One aspect that really stands out is the game's deeper RPG elements, as developer Obsidian Entertainment reflects on its history and draws inspiration from immersive sims like Deus Ex and Dishonored.
The Outer Worlds 2 builds on the foundation of first-person RPGs with more sophisticated systems than its predecessor. A true stealth system is now in place, along with better tools to support this playstyle, including effective melee weapons and skills for silent takedowns. A notable feature is the health bar above enemy heads, which includes a purple-colored readout indicating the potential damage from a stealth attack. This helps players determine whether a one-hit kill is feasible or if it's worth engaging the target. Additionally, enemies can detect dead bodies and alert others, but players with the right skills can quickly dispose of bodies to maintain stealth.

Later in the quest, players acquire the N-Ray Scanner, which allows them to see certain objects and NPCs/enemies through walls. This tool is essential for solving complex environmental puzzles and enhancing stealth and combat strategies. The N-Ray Facility is home to cloaked enemies that are invisible to the naked eye but can be detected with the scanner, adding a new layer of challenge and strategy to the gameplay.
The game features several interlocking systems that influence player choices and character builds, emphasizing the RPG elements. Stealth and immersive sim elements are just part of the expanded gameplay; Obsidian has also focused on improving gunplay, taking inspiration from Destiny to enhance the feel of firearms. While The Outer Worlds 2 isn't turning into a full-blown shooter, the gunplay now feels more in line with modern first-person games.
This improvement is evident when approaching the N-Ray Facility with a guns-blazing strategy. Movement mechanics have been refined to complement gunplay, allowing for more agile actions like sprint-sliding while aiming down sights. The return of Tactical Time Dilation (TTD) adds a bullet-time element to combat, enabling players to perform dynamic moves like throwing a grenade, activating TTD, and shooting it midair to cause an explosion among enemies.
While details about the story and the context of the N-Ray Facility quest are scarce, the gameplay video reveals tweaks in conversational mechanics. For instance, an interaction with an NPC named Exemplar Foxworth, who has survived a cultist takeover, allows players to help her based on their Medical stat or respond according to their Guns or Melee stats. The video also introduces a new companion, Aza, a former cultist who joins the player to rectify past actions.
Although many of these elements were present in the original Outer Worlds, the sequel aims to fully realize the vision that was set with the first game. My discussions with Obsidian provided insights into the new features and the driving vision behind The Outer Worlds 2. The game is poised to blend the RPG roots of the studio's past with modern first-person RPG elements, drawing comparisons to Fallout, particularly Fallout: New Vegas, which was frequently mentioned as a touchstone.
This is just a glimpse of what's in store for The Outer Worlds 2 and our coverage during this month's IGN First. I'll be delving into character builds, the new flaws system, an array of unique weapons, and the expanded scope of the sequel through interviews with key figures such as original Fallout developer and creative director Leonard Boyarsky, game director Brandon Adler, and design director Matt Singh. Stay tuned to IGN throughout April for more exciting updates!
